Announcement as candidate for AoT Commander
by Mike Crane

My fellow Compatriots,

After long and hard consideration, thought and prayer I am announcing that I am a candidate for AOT Commander at the Concord Reunion.

As a brief background I have been a member of the SCV since the mid 1980s. In this time I have seen many changes in our organization, but more important to Our Charge I have seen a much greater change in our society and the honor bestowed upon our ancestors.

Rapidly approaching 60, I look upon the society that my ten grandchildren are being raised in compared to when I was a child and it is found wanting. The very foundations of the principles upon which I was raised are the very same foundations upon which our country was founded – Southern Heritage. This is no longer true in today’s society. Political correctness did not write the Declaration of Independence, it was written by a Southern Man. A pointed head liberal did not lead the Continental Army to victory, it was a Southern Man. This list can go and on.

If you are a grandfather like me, then you also have seen the same changes. If you are a younger man, your grandchildren will be raised in an even worse society unless we do something about it now.

In 1896 our gallant ancestors formed the SCV for the reasons set forth in The Charge:

Charge to the Sons of Confederate Veterans

"To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we will commit the vindication of the cause for which we fought. To your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier's good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles which he loved and which you love also, and those ideals which made him glorious and which you also cherish. Remember, it is your duty to see that the true history of the South is presented to future generations."

Lt. General Stephen Dill Lee, Commander General,
United Confederate Veterans,
New Orleans, Louisiana, April 25, 1906.

These men felt the same concern for their future generations that you – and I – now feel for ours. Their goal was to preserve the birth right of their future generations. That has to be our goal also.

That is the reason for the SCV to exist. That is the reason that I joined. That is the reason I became a Life member and that is the reason we must improve our effectiveness. We must improve; we are not winning the war. If we do not secure our future generations birth right - who will?

In asking for your consideration I am not running against the incumbent. Commander Barrow is an admirable man; he is a fine Southern and Christian Man, very well spoken and an asset to the SCV. In normal times he would be the ideal candidate, but we do not live in normal times. Please bear with me as I repeat that for emphasis, “We do not live in normal times.”

Without any intent to defame any Compatriot I believe with all sincerity that we must improve the way we approach and solve the many serious challenges we face today. In my lifetime and 20+ years in the SCV I have developed a wide breath of experience, knowledge and skills. I will provide details and how they can be used to benefit your organization in following documents as they are much too large for an announcement.

If you believe that my experience, knowledge and skills will help our organization better face our myriad of challenges, then let me put them to work for you. Success against our opponents I can not promise, but I can promise to give you, the men of the AOT, two years of work, dedication and commitment to meeting The Charge for the benefit of our future generations.

In the Bonds of The South, and

For The Charge
