Confederate History and Heritage Month Proclamation

City of Suffolk, Virginia

Proclamation

WHEREAS , in April 1861, the Commonwealth of Virginia, in order to retain her sovereignty, decided to secede from the Union; and

WHEREAS, Virginia, known as the Mother of States and Statesmen, did not make this decision lightly, but only after exhaustive efforts to bring about a peaceful resolution to the issues which divided Southern and Northern States; and

WHEREAS, the sons of Suffolk and Nansemond County heeded the call of their Mother State by mustering over fifteen hundred soldiers and sailors to defend their country, city, county, home and family; and

WHEREAS, these brave soldiers of Southeastern Virginia of all races and religions fought in the Confederate Armed Forces with other men from across the South; and

WHEREAS, these men sacrificed their all defending Virginia; and

WHEREAS, after four years of service marked by unsurpassed courage and fortitude, the Civil War ended on April 9, 1865; and

WHEREAS , the knowledge of the role of the Confederate States of America in the history of our nation, Commonwealth, and City is vital to understanding who we are and what we are; and

WHEREAS , we honor our past and from it draw the courage, strength and wisdom to reconcile ourselves, and go forward into the future together as Virginians and Americans.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bobby L. Ralph, Mayor of the City of Suffolk, Virginia do hereby recognize the month of April, 2005, as:

"CONFEDERATE HISTORY AND HERITAGE MONTH"

in Suffolk, Virginia.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Suffolk to be affixed this 7 th day of April in the year of our Lord, Two Thousand Five.
